Men, intimacy does not happen by itself
When responsibilities and tiredness take over the day, intimacy should not become another item on the list. Petra writes about attention, initiative and making room for connection without pressure on the outcome.

There comes a moment in a long relationship when you begin to wonder where all that spontaneity went. Once, you could hardly wait to be alone. Today, the day breaks apart into work, children, messages, bills, tiredness and at least three more things you did not manage to finish.
Intimacy gets its turn only when you no longer have enough energy even to talk. It is not that you do not care. It is not that you no longer desire your partner. You are simply waiting for a quieter day, a better moment, more energy. That perfect moment often does not arrive by itself.
Men sometimes tell me they do not want to pressure their partner, but they do not want to seem uninterested either. They are afraid that every suggestion will sound like a demand for sex. So they remain silent, wait for a sign and hope that desire will appear on its own.
But intimacy rarely returns because we waited long enough. It returns when we make room for it again.
You are not scheduling sex — you are making time for the two of you
To some people, the word “planning” sounds like the death of passion. As though you need to enter Wednesday at eight in the calendar and then produce a romantic evening with the perfect ending.
Of course not.
Nobody is a button you can press after a difficult day and expect their body and mind to switch on immediately. You do not need to plan a performance, its duration or its outcome. You can plan something much simpler: an evening without phones, a walk, dinner without discussing responsibilities, touch that does not need to lead anywhere or time in which you return to one another without an audience or interruptions.
That is not another task. It is a message: “You matter to me. We matter.”
Presence begins before the bedroom
If you want more intimacy, do not wait only for late evening when both of you are already on the edge of sleep. A look, a message during the day, a hug you do not end first or a compliment that is not the opening of a negotiation can be enough to begin.
You do not need to play the seducer from an advert or guess what will turn her on. It is enough to genuinely notice her: ask how she is and hear the answer, approach without a list of what she has not done, tell her she looks beautiful without expecting something in return.
Desire is not built only in bed. It is built in the atmosphere of the relationship.
Initiative is not pressure
Many men confuse initiative with pressure. But there is a huge difference between “Come on, we never have sex any more” and “I miss the time that belongs only to us. I would love us to find it again.”
In the first sentence, your partner hears a complaint. In the second, she hears that you miss connection.
You can also say: “I would love us to switch everything off one evening this week and spend some time alone. With no plan for what has to happen.” That opens a door without pushing it through another person. If she is not in the mood, is tired or the moment does not suit her, that is not rejection. It is information you can hear without anger or withdrawal.
Nobody owes anyone sex, even in a long relationship. A relationship still benefits from an honest conversation about what you miss, what weighs on you and what might help you feel close again.
Do not turn closeness into an exam
When you finally have time alone after a long break, it is easy to turn the evening into proof that everything is all right again.
It does not have to be.
Perhaps you will only talk. Perhaps you will cuddle and fall asleep. Perhaps you will laugh because it feels a little awkward at first. All of that is part of returning to one another. If you measure every touch by asking “Will there be sex now?”, you can easily kill the very ease from which desire might grow.
Give yourselves room to be curious rather than successful. Sometimes it is enough to stop being flatmates who manage a household and remember that you are two people who can look at each other without rushing.
Do not wait for everything to be ideal
Life does not become less full over time. There will always be stress, work, children, parents, deadlines and days when nobody has the capacity for anything.
Do not wait for everything to fall into place before you begin caring for the relationship. That is like waiting until it will never rain again before watering a plant.
You do not need a weekend in an expensive hotel or a scene from a film. You need a little more conscious attention within the life you already live. Twenty minutes without screens. A kiss without rushing. A message that is not only about what needs to be bought. A conversation in which you do not defend yourselves or trade blame.
It may not look spectacular. But it is in small moments like these that the feeling of mattering to one another returns.
In the end
Men, you do not need to know the right move every time or create a perfect atmosphere. You do not need to be constantly ready, confident and funny.
But you can be present. You can ask, listen, initiate gently and accept the answer without a wounded ego. You can set aside time for the relationship without turning that time into an obligation to have sex.
Spontaneity has not disappeared because you grew up and now have a schedule. Sometimes it is simply waiting for you to make a little room for it again.
